Another book recommendation -
What they don't teach you at Harvard Business School by Mark H. McCormack
This book has a wealth of practical knowledge about business concepts that one learns through experience. The book is a series of notes on people skills, negotiating skills and general business administration. So its difficult to talk about the contents as such -- lots of small notes... as were there in "Winning" by Jack Welch.
While reading the book, many things come across as "obvious" or "standard" but still do read the whole book. I am sure that there will definitely be a lot of knowledge that you gain - if not from section then probably from another. McCormack takes you through his personal experiences and shares his wisdom in a very candid manner -- It is this frankness that makes the book truly enjoyable... McCormick has penned many thoughts that you always wanted to confirm, but didn't know whom to ask... I think this book contains tremendous amount of learning for everyone, and you can avoid learning the same things, the hard way.
The best thing that this book gave me is a newfound confidence in selling. I just didnt believe that I had any selling skills, and I never challenged that notion. McCormack did.
"... We question our sales aptitude. Suddenly the techniques we've use all our lives become foreign and mysterious...".
McCormack made me realise the various occasions that I did a good job at selling, all my life. Suddenly, in industry, people think that they cant sell. Well, for me, the first hurdle has been crossed and I do hope I will be able to do a good job at selling in industry.
I was so impressed by this book that I immediately bought the sequel "What they still don't teach you at Harvard Business School". More on that later. It would be great if any Harvard alumni can comment on this book. I do have an MBA, but not from Harvard, and my MBA school definitely didn't teach all thats there in this book.
