Review: The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive

The book tells a story of two rival CEOs - same industry, same target market, et al; One company is a success while the other is clearly headed towards extinction. One company has no employee retention issues, while the other loses people regularly to the first one.

Like his other books, Patrick Lencioni takes the reader through a step by step see-the-issue-and-fix-it. Lencioni has done an excellent job of presenting simple facts in a powerful manner. This book is about leadership -- this should be read by everyone in the organization and definitely the senior executives. It is easy to see the role played by the the CEO to ensure that everyone in the team is "rowing in the same direction" (this quote is from my companies' CEO)

To do this, Patrick Lencioni suggests a very simple model. Putting it here as bullet points really wont tell you much, you must read the book. However, for the impatient, here are the four obsessions that Lencioni is talking about:

  • Build and Maintain a Cohesive Leadership Team
  • Create Organizational Clarity
  • Over-Communicate Organizational Clarity
  • Reinforce Organizational Clarity Through
    Human Systems

Its a small book and a quick read, another good reason to get hold of it :-) Do read it.

Also, what is your opionion on what a CEO should be obssessed with? Do comment.
